SERVICE / ACCREDITED CALIBRATION

Accredited calibration to ISO/IEC 17025

Accredited means that a national body has assessed the laboratory's methods, equipment and competence. That is what makes the certificate a document an auditor accepts.

Accredited calibration laboratory

What is the difference between accredited and traceable calibration?

A traceable calibration can be traced back to a national reference. That is a requirement, but it says nothing about how the measurement was carried out.

An accredited calibration is traceable and is also carried out by a laboratory approved to ISO/IEC 17025 by a national accreditation body. The approval covers the laboratory's methods, its reference equipment, its calculation of measurement uncertainty and the competence of its staff, and it is reassessed at regular intervals.

The difference matters at an inspection. An accredited certificate does not need explaining. A traceable certificate without accreditation often has to be supplemented with documentation of how the laboratory works.

The calibration is carried out by accredited partners, DFM and DICKSON. We handle the planning, sensor exchange, certificates and making sure the intervals are kept.

A certificate without accreditation shifts the work to you

All calibration certificates look the same at first glance. They list measuring points, deviations and a date.

The difference shows when someone asks how the measurement was carried out, and with what uncertainty. If the laboratory is accredited, the accreditation body has already given the answer. If it is not, you have to be able to account for it yourselves.

That is why we use accredited partners. Not because the measurement is necessarily better, but because the documentation holds up without you having to spend time defending it.

What the accreditation covers

The methods

How the calibration is carried out, and which reference points are used. Assessed by the accreditation body.

The measurement uncertainty

How the uncertainty is calculated and stated. That is the figure your own assessment is based on.

The competence

That the people carrying out the calibration are qualified to do so, and that this is checked on an ongoing basis.

What happens during a calibration

The sensor is compared with a reference under controlled conditions, and the deviation is documented.

1

Stable environment

The sensor and a traceable reference are placed in an environment where the temperature can be held constant.

2

Comparison

Measurements are taken at several points across the range, and the deviation between sensor and reference is recorded at each point.

3

Correction

The correction coefficients are calculated and stored in the Smart-Sensor's own memory, so the data logger reads them directly.

4

Certificate

The certificate is issued with a serial number and placed in OCEAView, where it can be retrieved for the individual sensor.

Frequently asked questions

Who carries out the calibration?

Accredited partners, DFM and DICKSON. DFM is Denmark's national metrology institute. We do not carry out the accredited calibration ourselves, but we manage the process.

Why is the deviation shown on the certificate?

Because calibration is not an approval but a measurement. The certificate shows how much the sensor deviated, and with what uncertainty. The assessment of whether that is acceptable is yours.

How often should calibration be done?

You define the interval yourselves based on your SOPs and on what the equipment is used for. Typically it is every 12 months.

Where do we find the certificates?

Directly in OCEAView on the individual sensor, linked via the serial number.

Do all sensors need accredited calibration?

That is decided by your own risk assessment. Critical measuring points typically yes, less critical ones can make do with traceable calibration.

Can you calibrate sensors we already have?

It depends on the make and type. We look at it during the walkthrough and tell you honestly what is possible.
