Temperature monitoring of medicine refrigerators
Vaccines, insulin and biological medicines cannot tolerate temperature drift. We put a wireless sensor in each cabinet that measures around the clock, calls on deviation and stores every reading for documentation.
How do you monitor a medicine refrigerator?
A wireless Emerald sensor is placed inside the cabinet, typically in the middle and away from the cooling surface, and sends via Bluetooth to a data logger on the wall. No cable through the door seal. The readings are passed on to OCEAView, where every reading is stored. If the temperature goes outside the limits for longer than the agreed number of minutes, the system calls whoever is on call.
Limits and delays are set according to your own SOPs. We advise on placement, but the decision is yours.
The three things that go wrong
The door is left open
The most common cause of a deviation is not the compressor but a door that did not close. A dry contact cable registers it, so you can see the cause straight away.
It happens outside working hours
Friday evenings and public holidays. OCEAlert calls, texts or emails the person on call and moves on to the next on the list until someone acknowledges.
The documentation is missing
A handwritten log has gaps, and it cannot be used with the Danish Medicines Agency. The audit trail has no gaps.

Emerald
Wireless Bluetooth sensor with no cable. Mounted inside the cabinet and measures down to -40 degrees.
Cobalt X
Up to four measuring points, touchscreen, sound and light on the unit. Can be operated with gloves on.
Dry contact cable
Registers whether the door is open, so the cause of a deviation is visible straight away.
Connect Gateway
One unit for the whole building. Up to 50 data loggers and 100 to 200 sensors.
No cables through the wall
The Emerald sensor is mounted in the cabinet and sends via Bluetooth. No cable through the door seal, and the rest is wireless.
Bluetooth
For the sensing. The Emerald sensor can be mounted inside the cabinet with no cable at all.
LoRaWAN
The signal is passed on to the gateway. Up to 15 km in open air, 1 to 2 km inside a building.
Wi-Fi
Cobalt XS Wi-Fi for smaller installations, or when a logging interval faster than 1 minute is needed.

Frequently asked questions
Where in the cabinet should the sensor go?
Typically in the middle of the cabinet and away from the cooling surface, so it measures what the medicine experiences and not the air by the evaporator. We advise on placement when we visit.
Does a cable need to go through the door seal?
No. We use a wireless Emerald sensor that is mounted inside the cabinet and sends via Bluetooth to the data logger. No cables through the seal.
Can we get an alarm on the door and not just on the temperature?
Yes, via a dry contact cable on Cobalt X. Then you can see whether the deviation is caused by an open door or something more serious.
How do we avoid an alarm every time someone fetches medicine?
Each alarm limit can have its own delay. The limit must be exceeded for the number of minutes you decide before the alarm goes off.
How often does the sensor need calibrating?
You define the interval yourselves based on your SOPs, typically every 12 months. The system notifies you when a sensor's calibration is getting too old, and you decide whether the notice should come well in advance or only once the interval has been exceeded. The certificate is retrieved directly from the sensor.
What does the Danish Medicines Agency require?
That storage conditions are under control and can be documented. We supply the system and the documentation. Assessing whether your practice meets the requirements is up to you or your QA.
