MAPPING / SUMMER AND WINTER

Summer and winter mapping

A study from January does not document July. If the room is affected by the outdoor temperature, the warmest point moves with the season.

Why map in both summer and winter?

Because the distribution in a room is not constant. In winter it is typically coldest by outer walls and doors, and the cooling system works less. In summer it is the reverse: heat gets in at the same places, and the system works harder, which moves both the warmest and the coldest point.

If the fixed sensors are set up based on a winter study alone, they may end up where it is worst in winter, but not in summer. Then you are measuring in the wrong place half the year.

That is why the study is repeated in the opposite season, and the fixed sensors are placed so they cover both situations. If the difference is large, it can mean more measuring points than a single study would have indicated.

Whether it is necessary at your site depends on how much the room is affected by the outdoor temperature. We assess that during the walkthrough.

What changes with the season

The warmest point

Typically moves towards outer walls and doors in summer.

Load on the cooling system

The system works harder in summer, which changes the airflow in the room.

Doors and airlocks

The temperature difference between inside and outside is greater in summer, so an open loading door has a bigger impact.

Solar gain

Roofs and outer walls in the sun heat the room unevenly over the course of the day.

Ventilation

Systems using outdoor air change their contribution with the season.

The overall conclusion

Two studies give a full picture. One gives half the year.

When is one study enough?

If the room is internal with no outer walls, doors or solar gain, and the cooling system works roughly the same all year round, the difference is often small enough for one study to justify the placement. The assessment is yours, and it must be defensible. We say honestly what we assess during the walkthrough, but the decision on scope is part of your risk assessment.

Validation, who does what →

Two studies, one picture

The two studies are compared side by side, so the difference between the seasons can be seen directly.

If the difference is large, it usually means an extra measuring point rather than moving the existing one.

Mapping data and the fixed monitoring are in the same system. The study does not become a report in a drawer, it becomes the basis for the measuring points that continue running.

Frequently asked questions

Is summer and winter mapping a requirement?

If medicines or other temperature and humidity sensitive goods are stored in a storage area or warehouse, it is typically a requirement to be able to document the conditions across the whole area. If conditions change with the season, it may be necessary to measure at different times of the year to get an accurate picture.

How long is there between the two studies?

Typically six months, so they cover the warmest and the coldest period.

Do the fixed sensors need to be moved after the second study?

The sensors keep their placement between the two mappings. Between the studies they are taken down, recalibrated and mounted again at the same measuring points.

Does it also apply to refrigerators?

Rarely. A closed cabinet is less affected by the season than a room with outer walls and doors.

What if we have already mapped once?

Then we build on that study and supplement it with the opposite season rather than starting from scratch.
