MAPPING / REFRIGERATOR AND FREEZER

Mapping of refrigerators and freezers

Even a small cabinet does not have one temperature. There are differences between the top and bottom shelf, between front and back, and between door and rear wall.

Why map a single refrigerator?

Because the placement of the fixed sensor determines what you are really measuring. In a refrigerator there is typically a difference of a couple of degrees between shelves, and the warmest point is rarely where you would instinctively place the sensor.

A mapping study of a cabinet is carried out with several calibrated loggers placed according to a plan, running for an agreed period under normal use. The result shows the distribution and indicates where the fixed sensor should be placed afterwards.

The study is typically repeated when the cabinet is replaced, after service on the cooling system, or if the usage pattern changes significantly.

The number of points and duration are set in the mapping plan based on the size of the cabinet and your requirements.

What the study shows

The difference between shelves

Typically a couple of degrees from top to bottom. That determines where the sensor should go.

The effect of door openings

How quickly the temperature rises, and how long it takes to recover.

Defrost cycle

Brief rises that are normal, and that the delay on the alarm limit must allow for.

The effect of load level

A full cabinet behaves differently from an empty one, so the study is run under normal use.

The warmest point

The spot where the fixed sensor should sit, so you measure where the product is at risk.

The documentation

Heat map, min, max and average per point, and a reasoned recommendation.

Why defrosting matters

Most refrigerators and freezers defrost automatically at regular intervals, and the temperature rises briefly. That is normal and not a deviation. Without a mapping study you do not know how much it rises or for how long, and the delay on the alarm limit becomes a guess. With the study, the limit can be set so that defrosting does not trigger an alarm, while a real failure does.

Sensors during the study

Sensors are placed according to the mapping plan, typically at several heights and both front and back, and the cabinet is used as normal in the meantime.

It is precisely under normal use that the measurement result is representative.

OCEAView

Mapping data and the fixed monitoring sit in the same system. The study does not become a report in a drawer, it becomes the basis for the measuring points that carry on.

Frequently asked questions

How many sensors does a cabinet need?

It depends on the size and your requirements. A small cabinet can often be covered with a few points, a large one needs more. The number is set in the mapping plan.

Does the cabinet need emptying?

No, quite the opposite. The study is run under normal use, because that is what is representative.

How long does the study run?

Long enough to cover normal fluctuations, typically several days, so that working days, nights and the weekend are all included.

Do we need to map every single cabinet?

Your risk assessment decides. If the cabinets are identical and in the same room, one study can often cover several.

When do we need to map again?

On replacement, after service on the cooling system, and if usage changes significantly.
