FMS or EMS? It is the same system
Facility Monitoring System and Environmental Monitoring System mean the same thing. The difference is which industry you come from.
What is the difference between FMS and EMS?
There is no technical difference. Both abbreviations cover a system that measures environmental conditions continuously, raises alarms on deviations and stores the documentation in a log that cannot be altered.
FMS stands for Facility Monitoring System and is typically used in pharmaceutical production and by suppliers with roots in building operations. EMS stands for Environmental Monitoring System and is used more often in laboratories, in biotech and in English-language literature.
In practice they are used interchangeably, even within the same organisation. In some places EMS also means microbiological monitoring, that is sampling for bacteria, and that is a completely different discipline from temperature and pressure.
Why it is worth clarifying
The confusion costs time in a tender. If the requirements specification says EMS and the supplier talks about FMS, both parties spend a round working out whether they are talking about the same thing.
Instead, ask what needs to be measured, and where. Temperature, humidity, CO2 and differential pressure are concrete. Abbreviations are not.

The same system, whatever the name
Measures
Temperature, humidity, CO2 and differential pressure, continuously and with calibrated sensors.
Alerts
Call, SMS and email on deviation, with escalation until someone acknowledges.
Documents
An audit trail that cannot be altered, and reports that can be pulled per period.
Validated by us
We handle the validation, on our own or in close cooperation with your QA.
Wireless
LoRaWAN from data logger to gateway and Bluetooth from sensor to data logger, so the installation does not require cables through walls.
Calibrated
Traceable certificates for every sensor, and recalibration by sensor exchange without downtime.
Watch out for the third meaning
In some organisations EMS means microbiological monitoring, that is sampling and culturing to detect bacteria and particles in a cleanroom. That is a laboratory discipline and not measuring equipment. If the two are mixed up in a requirements specification, you end up asking for something no single supplier can deliver.
Where the system is used
The same system, different requirements depending on industry and equipment.
Frequently asked questions
Which term do you use yourselves?
We say monitoring system, because that is what customers understand. If you use FMS or EMS internally, we use your term.
Is there a difference in the requirements?
No. The requirements follow from what you do and what needs to be protected, not from what the system is called.
Does it also cover microbiology?
No. We supply measuring equipment for temperature, humidity, CO2 and pressure. Microbiological sampling is a different discipline.
What does our tender say?
It varies. If you are in doubt, send us the requirements specification, and we will tell you what we can and cannot deliver.
