Monitoring of samples that cannot be replaced
ULT freezers, liquid nitrogen tanks and cold rooms with sample collections built up over years. Measured around the clock, alarmed while there is still time, and documented without gaps.

How do you monitor freezers and liquid nitrogen tanks in a biobank?
With fixed temperature sensors that measure continuously and send data to one combined system. From there, temperatures can be monitored, alarms handled and history documented.
The system also gives a technical alarm for lost communication and sensor faults, so a sensor does not quietly stop measuring.

A freezer can be replaced. The samples cannot
A biobank is often the result of many years of collection, and some of the samples exist in only one place. If a freezer breaks down, the freezer is not the loss.
The problem is rarely that nobody notices. The problem is that it is noticed too late. A ULT freezer warms up slowly, and over a weekend it gets a long way before anyone opens the door on Monday morning.
The alarm has to go off while the contents can still be moved to another freezer. That is the whole difference.

What we monitor
ULT freezers at -80
A Pt100 sensor handles -80 degrees stably over time. Dry contact on the door and on the backup power.
Emerald + Pt100Liquid nitrogen tanks
Pt100 down to -200 degrees. Level and temperature alarm before the tank runs dry.
Emerald + Pt100Refrigerators and -20 freezers
Reagents, blocks and specimens. The Emerald Bluetooth sensor is placed directly in the refrigerator or freezer, so the door gasket is not broken.
EmeraldSample archives and cold rooms
Large rooms with several measuring points. Placement is determined by a mapping study.
Several loggers + mappingThe pathology laboratory
Room temperature and humidity by microtomes, staining machines and embedding equipment.
Temperature and humidity sensorBackup power and refrigeration plant
UPS and compressors via dry contact or 4-20 mA, so technical faults also raise an alarm.
Universal Smart-SensorWhat is a Pt100, and why does it matter at -80?
A Pt100 is a platinum sensor. The electrical resistance of platinum changes predictably with temperature, and at 0 degrees the resistance is exactly 100 ohms. That is what the name refers to. The relationship between resistance and temperature is known and stable all the way down to -200 degrees.
Ordinary digital temperature sensors are typically specified for a narrower temperature range, often down to around -40 °C. At temperatures around -80 °C they are therefore less suitable and may measure less precisely. Here Pt100 sensors are used, which are better suited to stable and precise measurements at very low temperatures.
When the temperature is around -80 °C, it places special demands on the sensor. That is why we use solutions developed for precise measurements at ultra-low temperatures.
The measuring range
-200 to +50 degrees for the cryo variant, -100 to +200 for the high-range one. ULT freezers and liquid nitrogen tanks both fall within this.
Traceability
The calibration coefficients are stored in the sensor itself. The certificate is retrieved directly from the sensor in OCEAView, so the accuracy can be documented.
The consequence
We typically recommend that you have 20-25 % extra sensors, so recalibration can run as an ongoing rotation. When a sensor needs calibrating, a spare sensor is put in its place, so monitoring continues without gaps in the readings.
The alarm does not stop until someone answers
An email at two in the morning is rarely enough. Via OCEAlert the alarm can be sent as a phone call, SMS and email at the same time, and it moves down the on-call rota until someone acknowledges.
The deviation is registered
The temperature crosses the limit. The delay ensures that a brief door opening does not trigger an alarm.
OCEAlert
Call, SMS and email to the person on call. All at the same time, not instead of each other.
It escalates
If the first person does not answer, the system calls the next on the list and keeps going.
It is acknowledged
The acknowledgement is stored with name and timestamp in the audit trail along with all readings.
OCEAView from DICKSON, set up and maintained by us
The hardware is DICKSON's. The software is DICKSON's. Everything between the equipment and your day-to-day work is ours. And once the system is in place, it is yours. You buy it, you own it, and no leasing agreement decides when you can switch, expand or stop. We take care of maintenance so it keeps running.
OCEAView
The whole setup on one screen. Watch mode gives a combined status overview of the equipment you have access to, with up to 100 units per page, and every graph can be zoomed down to the individual minute. Plan View also places the points on your own floor plan, so the person on call can see which room it concerns.

An audit trail that cannot be altered
Every reading, alarm and acknowledgement with timestamp and user. That is what an auditor asks for.
Report in one click
Choose a period and export the report as PDF or CSV. Ready before anyone asks.
Cloud or your own servers
On-premises runs at your site with LDAP, and you control updates yourselves, so the qualification holds.

We advise on placement, design the setup, install, set up alarms and on-call rotas, train your staff on the system and manage calibration afterwards.
You
Owner of the system
The system is yours. You set the limits, response times and requirements according to your own SOPs. We supply the system and the documentation, handle the validation, on our own or in close cooperation with you, and maintain it afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
Why Pt100 and not an ordinary sensor?
We use a Pt100 Smart-Sensor. Ordinary temperature sensors are not specified for -80 degrees and drift over time in that range. Pt100, on the other hand, is. The Smart-Sensor part stores the calibration information in the sensor itself, so the accuracy can be documented and the certificate follows the sensor.
Does the sensor have to go inside the freezer?
Yes, the sensor itself. The data logger sits outside on the wall. The cable is fed through the freezer's access port or the door gasket without breaking the seal.
Can we also monitor liquid nitrogen tanks?
Yes. Pt100 rated to -200 degrees covers the range. This puts cryo freezers and liquid nitrogen tanks in the same dashboard as everything else.
Will we be notified if a sensor stops measuring?
Yes. The system gives a technical alarm for lost communication and sensor faults, so a silent sensor is not mistaken for a stable measuring point.
What happens during a power failure?
The data logger continues on battery, and the gateway can have backup. Dry contact on the backup power also raises an alarm when the system switches over.
How quickly do we need to react?
That depends on your own SOPs and on how quickly the specific equipment warms up. Delay and escalation are set up accordingly when we install.
